The guitar is a great instrument for all ages, and many students can start as young as 4.
That said, it’s important to choose the right guitar size and type for your child. Guitars come in scaled-down versions to fit smaller hands, and picking the right one can make a big difference in how comfortable and enjoyable learning feels. We’re happy to help guide you—generally, a ½-size guitar works well for ages 4–7, a ¾-size for ages 8–11, and a full-size guitar for most students 12 and up. Let us know what you’re considering, and we’ll make sure your child starts off with the right fit.

You can technically learn on either. It really depends on what your goals and desires are for learning guitar. In general, learning on an acoustic is more “foundational” for understanding the guitar as a whole. Young learners will also develop more finger strength on an acoustic, which will make switching to electric much easier. But if your child has a natural inclination to electric guitar, start them out on that!
