What better time of year for your child to show off their piano skills than the holiday season? While recitals and other public performances provide them with such a chance, these events also don’t come around that often. Your young pianist may want to play before an audience other than just their teacher and their immediate family.
That’s why a number of piano lessons in Denver change things up by introducing Christmas songs once the weather starts to get chilly. Your child can learn a number of great songs to play during family gatherings.
Here are a few of the easier Christmas songs to learn that can be a nice change of pace from practicing other beginner piano songs.
Jingle Bells
Jingle Bells is one of the most well-known holiday songs. It’s also one of the easier songs to learn on the piano, especially if you have a metronome to help you keep the rhythm.
Silent Night
One of the things that makes Silent Night such an easy song to learn is that it only requires players to use the white keys. It’s also a great song for learning the pedal, so teachers often assign it to help their students learn how to properly pick up their foot during parts of a song.
Frosty the Snowman
Another popular song that younger kids love, Frosty the Snowman provides young players with a melody that can be learned fairly easily.
Walking in a Winter Wonderland
This one is a bit more challenging than some of the other songs listed, but Walking in a Winter Wonderland still isn’t that difficult of a song to learn. Your child should start with the melody. Once they have it down, they can start using their left hand to add in the chords. With some practice, they will be able to play this song easily.
Deck the Halls
Everyone knows the “fa la la la la” part of Deck the Halls, and the song is just about as easy to play as those lyrics are to learn. All your child has to do is learn how to play the hook and then repeat it three times. It’s easy to play, but there are some people who don’t know the full lyrics.
Away in a Manger
Away in a Manger only uses eight notes, and they’re all played by the right hand. That makes it quite the simple song to learn, and it also presents a fun challenge to more experienced players: play it only using the left hand.
The First Noel
Another song that offers more of a challenge is The First Noel. This one gives players the chance to practice playing the melody with their right hand while holding the bass notes with the left.
It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
There are a number of different tempos or speeds that players can use for It’s Beginning to Look at Lot Like Christmas. This gives your young pianist a chance to really play around with the song and make it their own. They can make it an up-tempo version or even try slowing it down a bit.
The 12 Days of Christmas
The 12 Days of Christmas may look like a more complicated song at the beginning, since it has a lot of verses, but it’s actually done with only three main chords. With some practice, players won’t have any trouble getting through everything from the maids a milking to the partridge in a pear tree.
