Teacher Profile: Richard Chan

About Richard Chan

Primarily teaching piano and guitar, Richard loved music since he was a child. At the age of 7, he was already interested in listening to all types of music. He especially loved the waltz pieces composed by Johann Strauss. The Blue Danube was one of his favorites. He was enrolled in private piano lessons not long after his mother discovered his love of music. His first teacher was a retired recital performing arts teacher in her 60s. She was experienced and patient to guide Richard to learn piano and music. He spent the next 12 years learning, performing in recitals and passing exams and certified by the Royal School of Music in London to Grade VIII piano and Grade V in music theory.

After he immigrated to the US, he took music classes as he pursued the degree of Bachelor of Arts and Business Admin at U of Wisconsin. Later, he completed his master's degree at U of Washington.

While in school, he accompanied piano for many contestants winning first honors at various music festivals. He was also a regular member in a choir which won multiple trophies. In his teen years, Richard was gifted his first guitar. His brother played in a band. With his foundation in piano and music theory, he easily picked up techniques with his guitar. Later, he received instruction from professional band members. During his early college years, he formed a music group, and they won competitions in a couple of music festivals. He also taught a few group classes and individuals in both guitar and piano. He performed during his college years in various school events.

Music has brought much joy and personal growth for Richard. He came from a family of teachers. He is very passionate believing music would be a good learning experience for children. It will benefit them for a lifetime. It also brings enjoyment and relaxation for adults to de-stress after a busy day. He loves to work with students of all ages. He is a believer that one can learn, enjoy and benefit from music beginning at any age. Richard is bilingual, speaking fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin. His ability to connect with bilingual families is a plus.

Outside of music, Richard enjoys watching professional soccer games, walking, working out at the gym and having conversations with friends.
