Nicholas Diaz is a trumpet player, educator, and mentor based in Miami Beach, Florida. With a passion for both classical and jazz music, he has dedicated his career to performing and teaching, inspiring the next generation of musicians. In addition to the trumpet, Nicholas also plays the French horn and baritone.
Nicholas began his musical journey at age 9, studying piano under various teachers. At age 11, he transitioned to the trumpet and quickly developed a deep love for the instrument. His middle school teacher, Mr. Ray Modia, played a pivotal role in fostering his passion for jazz, setting him on a path of musical exploration.
During high school, Nicholas studied under Bringle Cidel at Miami Beach Senior High, where he expanded his skills to include the French horn and baritone. He took on leadership roles as band captain and drum major, which sparked his interest in teaching and mentoring young musicians. This experience led him to pursue a degree in Music Education with a minor in Jazz at the University of North Florida, where he studied under Randall Tinnin and J.B. Scott.
As a performer, Nicholas has had the opportunity to play in esteemed ensembles and venues. While in high school, he was a member of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony and participated in the Miami-Dade County Honors Band and Symphony Orchestra for three consecutive years. In his senior year, he was invited to perform with the All-State Honors Band. Throughout his collegiate years, he performed at renowned venues such as the Jacksonville Performing Arts Center, the Jackie Gleason Theater, and the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami. Nicholas has also had the privilege of performing alongside legendary musicians, including Bunky Green, Ron Carter, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, and the Maria Schneider Orchestra.
Nicholas has been teaching music privately since 2007, and he takes great pride in watching his students grow into both skilled musicians and well-rounded individuals. His teaching philosophy emphasizes technical proficiency, musicality, and the life lessons that music imparts, including discipline, perseverance, and teamwork—qualities that help students succeed both in music and beyond.
Currently, Nicholas serves as the brass technician at Miami Beach Senior High, where he plays an integral role in shaping the school’s music program. Under the direction of Marie Escobar, he assists with the marching band, jazz band, and wind ensemble, helping students develop both their technical abilities and artistic expression.
Outside of music, Nicholas maintains an active lifestyle through sports such as scuba diving, surfing, and skiing. He participates annually in the TriKB Triathlon and stays fit by running, swimming, and biking.
Nicholas’s deep passion for performance and education continues to inspire young musicians as he joyfully shares his love of music with the community.
