Teacher Profile: George Mayo

About George Mayo

George Mayo III is from Wilmington, North Carolina where they began their musical journey on the trumpet in 2011. They are an active Brass and Piano Teacher in the Washington, D.C. area, working with students of all ages.

George was an avid singer throughout middle school and high school where they played roles such as Sebastian in the Little Mermaid the Musical and The Big Bad Wolf in Shrek the Musical. George began their College Career in 2017 at Wingate University where they participated in the Wind Ensemble as principal trumpet and sang in choir under the direction of Dr. Kenny Potter. In 2019 George moved to Delaware and began schooling at the University of Delaware where they graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor’s in Trumpet Performance under Mark Clodfelter, Dr. Chris Underwood, and Collaborative Pianist Rebecca Wilt. While there, they performed with the UD Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Lauren Reynolds, during the 2020 CBDNA Conference in Philadelphia, traveled to Prague performing in the WASBE Conference, performed side by side with the West Point Band, and performed two degree recitals that pushed the boundaries of the trumpet repertoire. They have also been apart of the Alexander Technique study since 2018 where they studied with Jan Baty.

George is also a performing artist at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Wilmington NC and has been since 2015. They have been performing there for Christmas, Easter, and special occasions. During the church’s LGBTQIA+ Call to Arms service.

George was invited to be the keynote speaker and performer. They have also volunteered for the National Trumpet Competition since 2022 and competed at the 2023 National Trumpet Competition with their quartet where they placed into the semi finals. They also were semi finalists at the International Trumpet Guild Ryan Anthony Memorial Chamber Music Competition in the summer of 2023.

George is interested in more than just music however. They also work at Union Market in D.C. and are an avid nature-goer who enjoys being surrounded by natural environments and listening to their inner self. During the summer they also love to travel back home to Wilmington, NC to surf with their best friend! George is a person who accepts all and is always trying to find ways to expand and diversify music and the arts.
