Yilin Ulwelling is a classically trained pianist and passionate music educator with over a decade of experience as both a performer and teacher. Her musical journey began at the age of seven, when she first sat at a piano and discovered a deep connection to the expressive power of music. That early curiosity grew into a lifelong dedication, culminating in advanced academic study and a diverse, international teaching career.
Yilin holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from South China Normal University (2012–2016), where she built a solid technical foundation and developed her passion for classical music. Seeking to broaden her musical perspective and deepen her training, she moved to the United States to pursue a Master’s degree in Music Performance at the State University of New York at Fredonia (2016–2018). During her time there, she was awarded a Graduate Assistantship, serving as a collaborative pianist and vocal coach. In this role, Yilin worked closely with the university’s opera, musical theatre, orchestra, choir, and chamber ensembles—experiences that enriched her skills in accompaniment, rehearsal collaboration, and musical leadership.
Beyond her academic responsibilities, Yilin also served as a part-time music director at a local church in Fredonia during the summers. In that role, she led weekly services, arranged music selections, and directed both instrumentalists and vocalists—adding a spiritual and communal dimension to her professional growth.
Yilin began teaching private piano lessons in 2015 and has since guided students of all ages and skill levels in both China and the United States. She is fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English, and she welcomes families from diverse cultural backgrounds into her studio. Known for her gentle yet disciplined teaching style, Yilin balances encouragement with structure, helping her students build both confidence and competence at the keyboard.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes more than just learning notes. She strives to help students truly understand and enjoy music—to explore the emotional depth and historical context behind the pieces they study. Whether guiding a beginner through foundational technique or coaching a more advanced student on expressive interpretation, Yilin tailors her lessons to the unique needs and goals of each individual.
Yilin also places great value on building long-term relationships with the families she works with. She views her role not just as a teacher, but as a mentor and musical partner, committed to helping each student grow in artistry and self-expression over time. She is proactive in communicating with parents, setting goals, and creating a positive, supportive learning environment both in and outside of lessons.
Through her work as a performer, collaborator, educator, and mentor, Yilin Ulwelling continues to inspire students to not only play piano—but to connect deeply with music and carry that love with them throughout their lives.
