About Valerie Straus

Valerie Straus is a dedicated piano teacher based in Bethesda, Maryland, with a passion for helping students of all ages and learning styles discover the joy of music. With a strong foundation in classical training and a love for contemporary styles, she creates engaging, personalized lessons that build both skill and confidence.

Valerie believes that every student learns differently, so she tailors her teaching approach to match individual goals—whether that means preparing for recitals, mastering technique, or simply playing favorite songs for fun. Her lessons emphasize proper technique, music theory, sight reading, and expressive playing, all in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Known for her patience and enthusiasm, Valerie strives to inspire a lifelong appreciation for music in each of her students. She welcomes beginners through advanced players and is committed to helping every student reach their full musical potential.

Valerie taught more than 10 years in Montgomery County Public Schools as an elementary general music teacher and chorus teacher. She received the Origine Huss Scholarship Award in her studies at Towson University where she also served as the music director of the a capella group Tiger Tones.

In addition to playing piano, Valerie loves to sing, paint, and walk in nature. She can often be found watching TV with her cat Nellie. Valerie loves to take walks in nature every day, weather permitting.
