Sten Greifer is a Professional Drummer and Music Educator based in the Washington, D.C. area. He works with Drum and Percussion students across all genres and styles, as well as Piano. A graduate of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Sten has performed alongside such jazz luminaries as Chucho Valdés and Marcus Strickland. He has received tutelage from internationally-renowned artists such as Dafnis Prieto, Brian Lynch, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. He has also studied with acclaimed Drummers based around the D.C. area, like Wes Crawford and Steve Fidyk.
Sten’s primary goal as a player is to be as musically versatile as possible, while simultaneously injecting his own personal creative touch into every note he plays. While heavily steeped and educated in the tradition of jazz and improvised music, Sten has professional experience playing rock, funk, R&B, pop, country, and a multitude of other musical styles. He also has a particular interest in Cuban and Brazilian music. No matter the genre, Sten takes a personal responsibility in delivering a performance that feels authentic to the style being called for.
Sten is proud to offer private Drum & Piano Lessons to students of all ages, and he places a significant focus on developing a customized approach to every individual student. He has taught in various settings, including work with groups and ensembles, as well as volunteering. His range spans from Classical studies, including Orchestral Percussion, through jazz and rock. His goal is to help his students see the intersection between styles and the fundamentals that carry between genres. Sten is a big believer in developing versatility and creativity with his students from the very start.
In addition to working with students for one-on-one lessons, Sten can be found performing in and around the DC area. Sten has also performed on cruise ships and at various venues, festivals, and events across the US in recent years. As a lifelong musician, he strives to continue evolving as a performer and artist through collaboration with musicians from varied musical backgrounds, genres, and settings.
