    About Rafael Cardenas

Rafael Cárdenas is a professional guitarist, pianist, bandleader, and music educator based in Seattle. Originally from South America, Rafael began studying music at a young age through his local church before continuing his guitar education privately with accomplished musicians in his hometown. Those early experiences developed into a lifelong interest in jazz, harmony, improvisation, and performance.

After moving to the United States, Rafael continued his musical studies both independently and academically, including a year of study at the University of Washington. A major part of his musical development came through six years of private study with professional guitarist and Berklee College of Music graduate Francisco Quintero, with whom Rafael studied jazz harmony, improvisation, technique, ear training, and musicianship. He has also continued studying privately with musicians whose playing he admires within the Seattle jazz community, believing that learning directly from active professional musicians is an important part of his own continued growth as both a performer and educator.

Rafael began teaching professionally through Guitar Center and later developed a private teaching practice, working with children, teenagers, and adults through private lessons, churches, and community settings. Over the past several years, he has become especially passionate about helping young musicians build confidence, develop strong fundamentals, and discover their own musical interests. His teaching approach combines structure with creativity, adapting lessons to each student’s personality, learning style, and goals. Students may explore technique, reading music, rhythm, ear training, music theory, improvisation, songwriting, or simply learn the music that inspires them.

Alongside teaching, Rafael is an active guitarist and bandleader in the Seattle jazz scene. For the past several years, he has regularly performed and participated in jam sessions throughout the city, including performances at venues and organizations such as North City Bistro, The Royal Room, Seattle Jazz Fellowship, Aurora Borealis, etc. He currently leads his own jazz ensembles and performs a wide range of music influenced by modern jazz, blues, Latin music, Brazilian grooves, and bossa nova.

Rafael believes that being an active musician makes him a stronger teacher. His goal is not only to help students become better instrumentalists, but also to help them understand music, develop confidence and creativity, and build a relationship with music that can continue throughout their lives.

Rafael teaches guitar at all levels, as well as intermediate piano and ukulele.
