Teacher Profile: Mica Alexander

About Mica Alexander

Striving to innovate connection through music, Mica values the expression and storytelling music has to offer above all else. He has been a pianist, drummer, and percussionist since early childhood and has taught music for the past several years. While his primary instruments are piano and percussion, he also composes for dozens of instruments, and writes tracks for media such as video games, films, and more. Mica is a member of the University of North Texas Electronic Ensemble, where he writes original pieces with his group members to perform live in concert. His previous work in the ensemble included programming a motion-glove to play a piano from across the room, sampling retro game consoles live to make dance music, programming an arcade-style dance-pad game for volunteers from the audience to play with a live-band, and much, much more. Mica uses music composition as a framework for teaching, prioritizing the “why” over the “what”, and makes sure to provide valuable knowledge on music as a concept throughout his lessons. He establishes music as a means of expression so that his students may turn to it when they need it most, and aims to help them find that same spark he found when starting his musical journey. Outside of his connections through music, Mica pursues other forms of connection, including spending time with his loving partner, Sydney, hanging with his lifelong friends, and working on his original narrative-driven video game project, “Tale of Dissonance”. Mica is committed to sharing the power of musical expression and the value of connection.
