Matthew joined LIYH in April 2026 as a music teacher in piano, voice, as well as general music theory and music history. He welcomes students at the age of four and above to take a trial lesson with him for a feel of his music teaching style and overall attitude towards music appreciation, as well as matching the learning goals and expectations between teacher and student. He also enjoys teaching adults or even seniors who would like to take on some form of music studies as a side hobby to enrich their personal living style.
Matthew studied piano and choral singing since he was a young child. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a double major in Accounting and Japanese in 1994. Music studies have always been a major component in his life and he achieved the DipABRSM of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) in Piano Teaching in 2013, as well as the ARCT of the Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in Voice Performance in 2017. He studied Voice with Mr. Geordie Roberts at Capilano University in North Vancouver and completed his major in 2018. After graduation, he further studied early childhood education at the Burnaby School Board in Canada and practiced the profession with infants, toddlers and preschoolers in a childcare center also located in Canada.
Matthew has set his current primary teaching goal to assist younger students or fresh music beginners to learn music as a general scope while focusing on an instrument such as piano or voice where application of vast music knowledge could be achieved over time. He would like to practice his teaching philosophy and syllabi of piano and voice studies with the emphasis on aural sensations as well as their relationship with different music genres and eras while articulations of various performance techniques and music styles could be reflected. His secondary teaching purpose is to lead students in overcoming anxiety in live music performances not solely by the power of strong memory but also by gaining experience in real life live performing opportunities. His third purpose but not the least is to enlighten one’s personal life through music studies in improving self-recognition and positive sculpting of one’s own personality and character.
Matthew has lived in Canada for the most of his life apart from his early childhood and high school experiences in Hong Kong. He encouraged young children to take advantage of precious time when they are fresh and brand new to get themselves exposed to some form of music appreciation activities so that they have a better choice and an earlier choice to strike on a new journey of music studies. Music could be learned through expressing it in writing on a sheet of paper but more importantly, the listening aspect of its overall value and meaning.
