    About Kristin Camp

Kristin Camp’s piano career began at the early age of 4 when she started taking lessons. As she progressed through her teenage years, her natural ability and consistent practice led her to study under a conservatory teacher. This opened doors for her to participate in Guild and MTA, as well as competitions from 1980 to 1983, during which she won several state and national awards. She was fortunate to receive scholarships from Biola University, Hope College, and Seattle Pacific University in their piano programs.

In 1983, Kristin entered the Piano Performance degree program at Bob Jones University, where she passed all adjudication requirements and graduated with a degree in Piano Performance. She concluded her senior year with a 55-minute recital featuring works from various historical periods. After graduation, she was hired as a music and piano teacher in Greenville, SC, from 1987 to 1989 before moving to Indiana.

In 1990, Kristin became the primary teacher at Roland’s Kids and Keyboards, a group teaching model that focused on MIDI and digital pianos. In 1992, she was flown to the University of Minnesota to receive certification in group teaching on Roland keyboards and their curriculum. She continued teaching private lessons at Music Today in Anderson, IN, while also building her own private studio. She recruited students through schools, organizations, churches, businesses, and even radio and newspaper ads, long before the internet was an option.

As the main teacher at Music Today, Kristin coordinated performances for her students in various community settings—hospital lobbies, senior centers, malls, and coffee shops—to give them opportunities to perform and share their music with others. Her private studio grew to an average of 43-51 students per week. Despite the demands of raising her own children, who are now musicians as well, she continued to perform for weddings, events, and in church.

Music, and particularly piano teaching, is at the core of who Kristin is, and she has found immense joy in guiding students. She believes her strength as a teacher lies in the nurturing relationships she builds with her students. With a background as a camp counselor, church nursery worker, and a parent and grandparent, Kristin connects with students across many age groups. Her goal is to make music education well-rounded—instilling a love of theory, ear training, music history, note reading, performance, and technique. While not every student may attend prestigious music camps or schools like Interlochen or Juilliard, if she can instill a love of music in them, she has done her job.

Many of Kristin’s students have gone on to perform and build their own private studios, which brings her immense pride. Additionally, her four grown children are all musicians, with one being a multi-platinum award-winning producer, songwriter, and musician. This journey with her students and children continues to bring her ultimate joy and fulfillment.
