About Humberto Almeida

Humberto Almeida, a Brazilian-born pianist, earned his Doctorate from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Recognized in his youth by leading Brazilian newspapers as one of the country’s most promising pianists, Dr. Almeida has received numerous accolades for his performances and studies both domestically and internationally. He made his debut in 1993 with the Campinas Symphony Orchestra at the VII Eldorado Prize, Brazil’s premier music competition, and subsequently appeared as a soloist with major orchestras across Brazil, as well as radio and television performances.

Since relocating to the United States, Dr. Almeida has performed throughout the Americas and Europe, working with musicians as both a soloist and a collaborative pianist. His notable mentors include Paul Berkowitz, Sergio Gallo, Gilberto Tinetti, and Claudia Chueiri. During his 16-year residence in Auckland, New Zealand, he served as the Vice-Principal of Able Music Studio, playing a pivotal role in nurturing young talent; many of his students have achieved first-place awards in international competitions and gained admission to prestigious universities in the United States, England, and Australia.

Dr. Almeida’s reputation as an exceptional musician and educator has made him one of the most sought-after piano instructors in New Zealand. Over the past decade, he has run a music school, amassing extensive experience in teaching children and managing educational programs, organising classes, rehearsals, and concerts for thousands of students. He has fostered strong relationships with students, staff, and colleagues alike.

Having started his piano journey at the age of 8 by ear, Dr. Almeida has developed a teaching philosophy that integrates traditional techniques with ear training and spontaneous improvisation.
