Shin-Hyun Lee is a Washington, D.C. area Piano Teacher who lives in Northern VA. She was born and raised in Korea and began taking piano lessons at age of five. From that moment, she fell in love with the piano and with music itself. Combining her passion for music and her desire to help others, she chose to study Music Therapy and Psychology at Southern Methodist University, under Dr. David Karp, with Piano as her main instrument.
Shin-Hyun studied piano throughout childhood and in college as she pursued her degree and career in Music Therapy. During that time, she also studied Voice and Guitar as secondary areas that were part of her coursework for the therapeutic setting. However, in the private lessons and working with students, her focus is Piano and teaching through traditional methodologies, like Faber's Piano Adventures for younger students, and standard classical piano literature for those who have reached intermediate levels and beyond. Shin-Hyun especially enjoys working with young students and helping them discover the joy of music through piano study.
Due her music therapy background, Shin-Hyun has significant experience working with special needs and applying her knowledge in this area to private lessons for neurodivergent piano students. In the Music Therapy realm, Shin-Hyun completed her internship at the Kilmer Center in Vienna, Virginia, working with severe disabilities and autism in group settings. She also gained experience working with Alzheimer's patients in a group home setting. In addition, she has taught Music Together classes for children ages 0-5 and has served for many years as an accompanist for church praise teams and choirs.
Shin-Hyun Lee also holds a Master's degree in Counseling from Baekseok University in Korea. She has a deep love for listening to people's hearts and uses her counseling skills to understand and meet her student's needs. Caring, patient, and empathetic, she strives to nurture both musical and personal growth in her students and create a special educational connection.
Outside of music and teaching, Shin-Hyun enjoys reading, writing, walking, volunteering at her church, and spending time listening to others.
