    About Katharine Smith

Katharine, originally from Las Vegas, started her studies in piano at age 6 and in cello at age 11. She would go on to complete her Bachelor’s in Cello Performance from UNLV. During her time in Las Vegas, she won a prestigious citywide concerto competition, performed regularly in professional ensembles, and built up a small studio of cello and piano students. She then completed her Master’s in Cello Performance, as well as her certification to teach Suzuki Cello Books 1-10 from the University of Denver, before relocating to the DC Metro area.

She teaches from the Suzuki philosophy of “Every Child Can,” believing that everyone has the capacity to develop technical skill and emotional connection to music, and everyone stands to benefit as a human through musical experiences. She combines a variety of outlooks and techniques within and without the Suzuki method, as her genuine concern above all else is that her students walk away from their lessons with their own unique understanding of music.
