About K.R. Azad
K.R. Azad is a versatile musician, his 14 years of drumming experience evident in his ability to play in diverse genres such as jazz, rock, funk, and hip-hop. He has also learned about musical styles from around the world, augmenting his drumset abilities with knowledge of Cuban, Brazilian, West African, and Turkish percussion.
Azad has also strengthened his skills by teaching across these diverse genres, having taught drum lessons for a variety of genres and having taught classes for the African Drum Ensemble at KU. Azad is also an avid composer, having graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Music Composition from the University of Kansas in 2016.
He loves to write music for a variety of ensembles - including the Denver bands Brothers of Brass and Stop Motion in which he plays - and is the winner of the 2016 George Lawner Prize for Orchestral Composition at KU.
