    About Canter O'May

Canter O’May is a professional actor, singer, and educator based in the D.C. and Baltimore areas, and they perform regionally throughout the US. Canter has been working professionally as an educator and coach in the theater and music realm for over 7 years now. With a love for music starting at the age of 6, they took to music early in life and pursued this passion ever since. Their love of the stage and art form led Canter to study at both the University of Tampa and The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

Teaching means a great deal to Canter and is a passion all its own in their journey. Believing that the arts can (and should) be a part of everyone's educational experience is a driving force behind their lessons and creating a customized experience for students. Canter focuses on setting specific goals with their Voice students that are personal and appeal to their genre of interest. Canter works with all styles of music: from classical to pop and musical theater. Setting strong musical foundations with breathing, posture, and learning the language of music are emphasized from the start in their lessons. Through these foundations, we are then able to tap in to each student's unique artistry and expression.

Canter also teaches piano and works with students from beginner to early advanced levels. Piano study has been a part of Canter's journey through their time in University and as a foundation for vocal study. Canter believes that piano is an important instrument for vocalists to use as a tool to support their study, but it's also a foundational instrument for those interested in studying any instrument in the future, or for those who would like to build their music literacy overall.

Canter's teaching style is motivational and encourages students to learn to grow in a way that leaves them feeling more self-sufficient and independent on their instrument. They believe in a fun and interactive approach to teaching music that is geared towards the students' own interests and passions.

As a fun fact, some of Canter's listening-favorites are Elton John, Kander and Ebb, and post modern Jazz.
