About Katie Sakanai
Katie Sakanai is a music teacher with over ten years of experience teaching choir, band and orchestra in a school setting. She also teaches private lessons in voice, guitar, ukulele and piano. Katie currently teaches in the Denver Public Schools and before that worked at the Dawson School in Lafayette, directing the choir, a cappella group and musicals. Other positions include choir and orchestra in Adams 12 and band and choir in Byers.
Katie completed her Masters Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in Conducting at CSU Fort Collins in 2010. Prior to that, she majored in music and Russian at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. After graduation she was awarded a Fulbright student scholarship to study music in Russia, and enrolled at the Gnesin Institute of Music in Moscow where she studied Russian art song and opera. She also studied trombone with the principal trombone of the Russian National Orchestra.
She is a member of the NAfME, CMEA, the Fulbright Alumni Association, and the Wellesley Alumnae Association. She currently performs as a vocalist in a jazz combo and has played and served on the board of the Thornton Community Band. She enjoys making music with her two-year old daughter, reading and spending time outdoors with her family.
