About Alex Weitz
Alexander Weitz, 22, is a saxophonist and composer from Tucson, Arizona. In 2013 he received his Bachelor of Music in Studio Music and Jazz Performance from the University of Miami. He is also a graduate of the award winning Tucson Jazz Institute High School program. Alex is currently pursuing a master's degree in Studio Jazz Writing at the Frost School of Music where he performs and composes in the Henry Mancini Institute Septet directed by Terence Blanchard. Alex is a talented jazz improviser and fluent saxophonist, well rounded and comfortable in many diverse styles and genres. In 2013, he released his first album "Chroma" of all original compositions. Alex has received distinction in Downbeat Magazine with an outstanding performance award in the 2013 Jazz undergraduate soloist category, and won the 2011 award for Blues/Pop/Rock soloist. In the summer of 2012 he was invited to attend the Banff International Jazz Workshop where he worked closely with many of the leading names in modern jazz. He has had the opportunity to share the stage with many jazz legends including Brian Lynch, Benny Golson, Dave Douglas, Dave Holland, Dave Liebman, Chick Corea and Terence Blanchard.
